What Is Yoga Therapy?

Yoga therapy is a client-centered, individualized approach to supporting health and wellbeing through the tools of yoga. Unlike group yoga classes, yoga therapy is tailored to the specific needs, goals, and circumstances of each person, and is designed to complement—rather than replace—medical or mental health care. Using movement, breath practices, meditation, relaxation, and lifestyle education, yoga therapy supports the integration of body, breath, mind, and nervous system to promote resilience, self-regulation, and healing.

Yoga therapy:

  • Offers a holistic approach to health and wellbeing

  • Is client-centered and individualized

  • Is accessible regardless of age, ability or prior yoga experience

  • Adapts practices to meet you where you are

  • Emphasizes safety, consent, and collaboration

I bring over 25 years of personal practice and teaching experience to my work as a yoga therapist and educator.

Credentials include:

  • Spanda Yoga Movement Therapist (IAYT-aligned)

  • E-RYT 500 Certified Yoga Teacher

  • Certified Vishoka Meditation Teacher (CVMT)

  • Certified Yoga for Cancer (Y4C) Teacher

  • Yoga Therapist at Prisma Behavioral Health

  • RYS-500 Founder and lead trainer of Sakhi Yoga 200-hour and 500-hour teacher trainings since 2011

What to Expect in a Yoga Therapy Session

Yoga therapy sessions are offered one-on-one and may be conducted in person or virtually.

Sessions typically include:

  • An comprehensive intake and collaborative goal-setting process

  • Gentle, therapeutic movement adapted to individual capacity

  • Breath-based practices to support regulation and awareness

  • Meditation, relaxation, and mindfulness techniques

  • Education related to stress physiology and self-regulation

  • Development of simple home practices to support continuity of care

Clients do not need prior yoga experience, flexibility, or fitness. Practices are adapted to individual needs and capacities.

Yoga therapy is approached as a collaborative process—one that empowers clients with practical tools they can integrate into daily life.

Scope of Practice & Ethics

Yoga therapy is not a substitute for medical, psychiatric, or psychological  treatment. I work within the ethical standards and scope of practice established by IAYT and collaborate with healthcare providers when appropriate. Referrals are made when needs fall outside the scope of yoga therapy.

Who Yoga Therapy Is (and Isn’t) For

Yoga therapy may be appropriate for individuals who:

  • Are seeking individualized, therapeutic support

  • Prefer gentle, adaptive, and accessible practices

  • Are interested in developing sustainable self-care skills 

  • Are engaged in or open to collaborative care

Yoga therapy is not:

  • A fitness or performance-based yoga class

  • A drop-in group experience

  • A replacement for psychotherapy, medical care, or clinical treatment
